Loose Ends
a TSRP short by Psalms

Templeton glanced down the alleyway, sizing up the white car parked just out of view of the public, the driver lighting up a cigarette. The silhouette of a person in the back-seat confirmed what Arhtur needed to know; his target was in his grasps. Ernesto Gabriel Mendoza, the old man who put Arthur Templeton into the world of contract killing some 25 years prior, the man who had stabbed him in the back. It was apparent by the frank look of disgust and loathing on the other-wise unremarkably loathesome killer that no matter what the old bastard had to say, it was going to be his last conversation on Earth.

Approaching the driver's side door, Templeton covered his mouth to keep from coughing, smoke trailing out of the open window. Reaching into his pocket, he drew out his Walther PPK, screwing on the suppressor he kept with him at all times. He chambered a round, something that brought up the hair on the back of the driver's neck. His eyes raised up to the side-view mirror, and the last thing he saw was a muzzle-flash.

The sound of the gunshot, muffled through the suppressor, echoed through the alleyway like a nailgun, a single shell falling to the cobble-stone; the bullet tunneled through the very base of the driver's skull, leaving a messy exit wound that splattered blood and grey matter onto the passenger-side window, the passing shrapnel crackling the tempered glass. Mendoza jolted, throwing his hands up in the back seat as Templeton pointed the gun back to the old man, a mean glare on the killer's eyes, the look of cold, calculating murder refracted through a pair of thick reading glasses. Without a word, Templeton motioned his victim out of the car with his gun, his free hand still in his pocket.

Mendoza shambled out, gripping his cane at his side with a trembling hand. "Now you just wait a moment, son," he started. "We can work this out, alright? We can fix this, but if you kill me..." Templeton watched his breath in the cold night air, swirling around the stubble of his beard, rising up like the steam of the manholes. "If you kill me, there's no going back."

The frigid air revealed all there was for Templeton to know about what old man Mendoza had to say. Nothing. Nothing but hot air.

Templeton scowled, and raised his pistol with one hand, squeezing off two more rounds in a jarring double-tap; Mendoza staggered off his feet and bumped the rear door of the car shut, smearing blood all over. He caught his gut with both hands, a look of total shock across his face, crimson pooling in his palms. He choked a bit, more sickening red trailing down his face, down his hands, down into the cobblestones. Templeton took his left hand out of his pocket, put both hands firmly on his Walther, and placed the front end of the suppressor against Mendoza's forehead. The old man's last thoughts passed out the back of his head, spattering onto the trunk of the car with the rest of his brains.

Stepping away and wiping down his pistol with a royal-purple kerchief, Templeton rolled the cleaned murder-weapon under a dumpster, picking up his gate as he heard murmuring commotion at the back end of the alleyway, over his shoulder. By the time the passer-by let out a shrill scream at the sight of the bodies, Templeton would be well en route, back to the local pub, with folks too hammered to quite tack down his whereabouts. He was confident the alibi would stick.

I'm a huge fan of the high caliber pistol shot to the face. Nothing says badass more than pulling a Frank Lucas on some cocky asshole to prove you mean business.

(For those of you who haven't seen American Gangster, there's a scene where Denzel Washington and a rival gang boss who thinks he's the current head honcho get into an argument over tribute money. Denzel pulls out a 1911 and blows his head off in the middle of the street to prove he's the top dog.)

I'm gonna agree with Eric, a pistol is just badassery in a small container.

(( Good story. And I'm going to go with hands. If you can kill someone effectively with your hands, you can kill them with anything. ))

((Hands are probably the most epic, knives the most brutal, and shotguns the coolest; but as far as bad-assery, I might go with Pistols, too. Particularly old-style revolvers and the classic Colt 1911(And it's many strange-looking, but remarkably similar cousins).))

I go with hands, since I'm an almost-blackbelt in goshin-ryu (I won't even try to explain the belt system, not that complicated though) I find myself quite predisposed to the decidedly epic act of:
-A dropkick to the face, prefferably launched off of some sort of object like a table or chair.
-A spinning kick of any sort, quite fancy death: for the win
-A flurry of blows; it's not a specific technique, but anybody who even says "a flurry of blows" deserves a hug.

When I did taekwondo, it went: white, yellow, orange, green, blue, purple, brown, red, black--with different degrees in between. I never really understood the symbolic purposes or methodology behind it. What order do you use?

My friend does karate, and he says his master does it like white, white-yellow, orange, red orange, etc.

(Aqua blue maroon orange anyone? )

Well, I think that the colors of alot of traditional karate-martial arts schools were supposed to represent stages of growth, like in an plant. I'm not sure of specifics though, and if you think about it the symbolism could probably be a number of things :? .

But we have 2 belt systems, one for adults and one for kiddies. Adult system is traditional, with white-yellow-orange-green-blue-purple-brown-black (I think). Kiddie system generaly follows the adult pattern, however there are more phases of each belt. Example: yellow-orange, green-blue, red-brown (no red belt in adult system, but there is in kid's system. I assume the extra belts are a way of rewarding the smaller kids for their successes. In today's world of constant rewards and "me me me" attitude, the owner of the school felt it necessary to add more frequent promotions. Of course you have to take the same amount of all-round time to reach your junior black belt, which comes before black.

So yea I like to use fists of steel in-game :D

(( Actually, come to think of it, I believe we used the same system. I wasn't sure if red existed after brown or not, at least in the adult system, and now I don't believe it did. However, as you said, I do recall the kids wearing a red and black belt to represent a junior black belt degree. However, for both systems we had different degrees per belt, which were simply represented by a piece of white tape on the belt. Anyway, I just wondered if the colors themselves represented something specific, since they are ranked a certain way.

And yes, I agree about the sawed-off shotgun being a badass way to off someone in-game. ))

((Oh, and on the topic of fists and bare hands in-game!

Do any of you people use /me, or is Kung Fu perfectly acceptable on the Nukesilo? I've come across a good multitude of folks willing to try to knock guns out of my hands, even a high-level Police Detective. I recall the only action he used was

(Action) Det. Nikolai Isakov disarms, shortly before he tried to back-kick me. Epic part was, he missed.

Next /me was...

(Action) Arthur 'Crank' Templeton is immune to powergames, and shoots the motherfucker.

I have a feeling we ought to learn to act out our hand-to-hand confrontations more; your comments, oh enlightened Mr. Murder? <3 ))

(( Hah, you inflate my ego too much! 8) Anyway, I believe it depends on the situation (big surprise). Obviously, if it involves something simple like a punch (slap) to the face for acting out of line, or as a part of a nasty little torture scene, then it makes sense to just click the mouse button and physically show what is going on. Now when it comes to something a little more complex, like a brawl or a confrontation between two people, then I would be more prone to using actions to play out the scene. The trick with actions, is to, first, offer an action that invites a rather open response. Something like "/me attempts to restrain your arms," is infinitely better than "/me tackles you and puts you in the Figure-4 leg lock." If the person interacting with you is a knowledgeable roleplayer, they'll be more likely to play ball this way. That's how one goes about igniting interesting roleplaying scenarios.

Of course, the best solution is to use actions more than anything, and in conjunction with everything else, including physical movements and verbal statements. Actions are the best tool for illustrating and communicating to others exactly how your character is behaving at any given moment. ))

(Action) Murdock first hones his gaze upon yours, the right side of his mouth tightening to a festive smirk. He then bows his upper torso ever so slightly, eagerly awaiting your reaction.
