You are given 5 bags. There are 10 beads in each of the bags. In four of the bags, the beads each weigh 10 kilograms. In the remaining bag, each bead weighs only 9 kilograms. All the bags and beads look identical. You must find out which bag has the lighter beads. The problem is that all the bags look identical and all the beads look identical. You can use a scale, but it has to be a single-tray scale, not a two-tray balance scale. Also, you may use the scale only once. How can you find out which bag has the lighter beads?

I had a problem like this once although it involved stones and one had a diamond in it and you had two two-tray balance scales, but I did figure this one out, I think. Do you put the bags on one at a time, one right after the other, so like, you put bag #1 on and see it weighs 10 kilograms so then you put on bag #2 with #1 still on etc. etc., and whichever one only increases the surmounting weight by 9 kilograms is the bag you want?

Okay, I think I have it this time. What you do is you put all the bags on the scale, and then one at a time you remove them until you find which bag has the 9kg beads. So when all 5 bags are on the scale it would weight 490 kg. So then you remove the bags until either A) the final bag weighs 90 kg or B) when you remove one of the bags it leaves the remaining bags weighing as a multiple of 100, so for example, if you removed the 3rd bag and it was the 90 kg bag, then the remaining bags would weigh 200 kg.

good idead but nopand dudeman you cn only use the scales once plus if u put 4 bags on and they didnt equal ninety you wouldnt kno which bag it was lol

Label the bags from 1 to 5. Take 1 bead out of Bag 1, and label it 1. Take 2 beads out of Bag 2, and label them both with a 2. Take 3 beads out of Bag 3, and label each with a 3. Continue this pattern with Bags 4 and 5. Put these 15 beads on the tray of the scale.

If all 15 weighed 10 kilograms, the scale would register 150 kilograms. But since one or more of the beads weighs only 9 kilograms, the scale will register less than 150. Subtract the number on the scale from 150. Your answer will tell you the number of the bag with the lighter beads. (If the scale registers 148, itÂ’s bag #2. If the scale registers 145, itÂ’s bag #5.)

You would have to mark them to know what bag has the right beads.

Not really, you could just separate the bags in order, like the first bag is first, the second is second, third is third, etc. and for the beads do the same thing, or depending on how large the scale is, separate them so you know which ones are which.
