Jack pauses while sipping his coffee in the grungy diner and looks out the dirty and frost fringed window out into the city. Across the sidewalk full of trash and street covered in oil and grime, behind a window on the second floor of a run down and dilapidated tenement building, sits a small girl, clutching her worn out and tattered teddy bear, staring off across the lights of the city, a look of despair and gloom on her face. But as Jack stares a little longer, seemingly unable to look away, a quick flash of hope flickers across her face. Jack had seen it a number of times in the citizens of this town, its almost as if there is an unseen force driving the people in this town to scratch out a living, never accepting the easy way of the Mafia or Yakuza, but straying away from the dangers of fighting those organizations head-on. But to Jack, having spent his last twelve years on the front lines of Mecklenburg and now Nuke City, that small glimmer of hope is what drives him to push forward. Ever haunted by the memory of his wife being gunned down at a convenience store, Jack had struggled to maintain his sanity in these putrid, vile wastes people tried to call a city, but every once in a while, something like that would rekindle his fire and help him drudge forwards. The sound of gunfire snaps him back to reality. Sighing, Jack exhales slowly, blowing tiny wisps of steam across his fingertips clasped around the warm porcelain mug. Glancing at his watch, he knocked back the last bits of the thick coffee and dropped fifty cents on the table and grabbed his worn out jacket, two scruffy NCPD patches barely visible on the shoulders. Pushing open the door, Jack looked up and down the street, bundling himself against the cold and got into his cruiser. Just another night in paradise, Jack mused, just another night.
